A mix of Japanese and European flavors: Jipan Café & Bakeshop

Another day, another trip to a new Japanese restaurant.

Majority of the Japanese restaurants around the Metro are modern, and quite a number of them are also fusion. Jipan not only is a modern Japanese fusion restaurant, it also has an addition of a cafe and bakeshop. The branch in the new ATC Corporate Center is only a few months old. Of course, we needed to try!

Like all restaurants in the new building, the space is quite small. We went there on a holiday, with no reservation, so we had to wait in line quite a bit. Wooden fixtures will great you. We were fascinated with the textured walls which looked like newspaper or magazine pages.

Jipan offers a wide variety of dishes from those you will typically see in other Japanese restaurants to those that are uniquely their own (such as the sushi pizza). We ordered a lot again! Sadly, we didn't order those unique dishes as we usually have our go-to dishes.

Gyoza, P195.00

Jipan Poppers, P235.00

Ebi Tempura, P370.00

Dynamite Roll, P405.00

Spicy Tuna Salad, P315.00

Mabo Dofu, P255.00

Pork Katsudon, P245.00

Not adventurous, right? The best thing about this, though, is that we get to compare where we can get the best of our go-to dishes (since we love going to Japanese restaurants).

The gyoza and tempura were quite good. There may be better gyoza out there (such as the gyoza from Yushoken), but we wouldn't mind getting gyoza here. We loved the tempura so much, we were still dreaming about it when we got home! The Jipan poppers, which were fried balls made with shrimp, kani and cream cheese, was just okay. It was a bit dry, so the saving grace of the dish was the tangy sauce it was served with. The Dynamite Roll, which is a temaki with shrimp, kani, tamago, cucumber, crunchy tempura bits, and Japanese mayonnaise, was also good and a good value for money. It was just a bit hard to eat because it was so big! They're comparable to the size of the temakis from Sushi Ninja (a Japanese restaurant in Alabang that specializes in sushi). My brother ordered the spicy tuna salad but was disappointed because it was so small and a bit dry. He asked for more of the spicy mayo sauce. The one at Sushi Ninja is better in terms of value for money. My mom got the Mabo Dofu. I didn't taste it since I can't eat spicy food but when I tried the leftover the next day, it wasn't so bad! I might even order it. I ordered Pork Katsudon, one of my go-to donburi dishes. This was such a value for money! It wasn't overly sweet. My brother and sister liked the saucy rice and egg, which I usually don't get to finish, so I gave them some to pair with the ebi tempura.

We also bought bread there which tasted good. They were good for making french toast because they're thick.

All in all, it was a good experience. I wouldn't mind going there for more tempura and pork katsudon. My family usually goes to Omakase if we wanted to have Japanese food. Jipan is a good alternative if you want donburi. I give it a 7 out of 10.
