Our family is always looking forward to trying out new restaurants, but I have to admit, we tend to stick to our usuals when we can't decide. Good thing my mother was insisting to eat at Mati's for my birthday.
Mati's Meat and Bread is a restaurant conceived by the people behind Melo's. If you know Melo's (I only know of it and haven't actually been there), they are known for offering really good steaks. However, it is quite upscale, and therefore, expensive. Thus, the birth of a casual place to get good yet affordable steaks. Mati's is located at the River Park, Festival Mall, Alabang. Ask to be seated by the windows so you can get a nice view of the river park.
The place has a romantic and rustic feel to it with its dim lighting and wooden fixtures. The space is quite spacious. For a casual place, it still offers an overall touch of elegance. We were seated in front of the massive wall chalkboard containing their menu (you will still be given a printed-out menu). It was just a tad too cold for my liking. We went there to eat steak, so steak it is! We ordered caesar salad for appetizer, with truffle pasta and salpicao pizza as our other main dishes. We only ordered the Hungry Man's Steak (a bigger version of their single serve steak dish) which is good for 2 people. Although we didn't order it, Mati's is also known for the Balut Aligue.
Nothing really wow about the salad and the pizza. Don't get me wrong; they were okay. I do find the price of the pizza quite expensive considering that it's thin crust (like a crispy tortilla) and with minimal toppings. The truffle pasta is sweet, savory, and a bit earthy. My brother really loved it. The steak was done quite well. We asked for medium well, and that's what we got. You can get the dish served either with rice or mashed potatoes. Since we asked for the latter, we asked for gravy. The 4 of us shared the 2 big pieces of steak. Don't expect a thick piece of steak, though (but it's not as thin as a minute steak so it's still good for its price). Because of the coldness of the restaurant, the steak got cold earlier than expected so eat it right away. Since it was my birthday, we were given a complimentary eclair cake! We quite enjoyed this ice cream cake-like dessert. We only had a couple of dishes but we were fully stuffed by the end of our meal!

All in all, we enjoyed our experience here. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We didn't have a reservation so we had to wait. I was amazed that the place was full on a weeknight (a Wednesday) that we had to wait for about an hour to get a table. We didn't mind the wait because we got to see the light show that was held at the river park (held every Christmas season). Now we know a place to get good steaks at an affordable price when we feel like it. Mati's is an 8/10! It's a good place to bring your family or loved one without breaking the bank.
